About Zaanse Golf Club
Zaanse Golf Club in Wijdewormer, North Holland, is an 18-hole, par-71 golf course in a polder full of water, designed by Gerard Jol.
Water is the defining feature of Zaanse Golf Club. Every hole brings a ditch, a pond or a lake into play, with water surrounding and crossing the holes, so accuracy pays off. The original nine play around a lake that formed when a dike broke in February 1825.
Five of the eighteen tees at Zaanse Golf Club sit on an old dike. On the 10th, 11th and 12th the Ringdijk comes into play, adding elevation changes and long views that are unusual on a polder course. The 11th is a 136-metre par 3 from the white tees. The 9th, a 423-metre par 4, is stroke index 1, and the 15th is the longest hole: a par 5 of 522 metres from the whites.
Zaanse Golf Club stands on the Zuiderweg in Wijdewormer, less than fifteen minutes' drive north of Amsterdam. The course lies in peat meadow country next to a Natura 2000 nature reserve, with the windmills of the Zaanse Schans turning in the distance.
The land under Zaanse Golf Club is reclaimed: the engineer Jan Adriaanszoon Leeghwater drained the Wijde Wormer in 1626. The club started with nine holes by Gerard Jol on the site of a former open-air swimming lake, and Jol returned in 2008 to extend Zaanse Golf Club to 18 holes.
Zaanse Golf Club has five par 3s, nine par 4s and four par 5s: par 36 on the front nine and par 35 on the back. The course measures 5,752 metres from the white tees and 3,862 metres from the orange tees. Men play the whites off a course rating of 72.0 and a slope of 135, and the yellows off 70.2 and 132. For women, the red tees carry a course rating of 71.3 and a slope of 126.
Can visitors play Zaanse Golf Club? Yes: green fee players need at least a Dutch GVB certificate, and tee times are booked online through the club's website. Next to the main 18, Zaanse Golf Club has four practice holes, all par 3s.
