About The Duke
The Duke Club in Nistelrode, North Brabant, is an 18-hole, par-72 golf course in woodland and heathland, in its current form designed by Alan Rijks.
The Duke began in the early 1990s as De Hooge Vorssel, a nine-hole course designed by Robin de Vooght. The Van Eerd family, known for the Jumbo supermarket chain, owns the course and brought in architect Alan Rijks to renovate the original holes and add nine new ones. The 18-hole course was finished at the end of 2015 and then took the name The Duke.
The Duke lies on the Slotenseweg in Nistelrode, east of 's-Hertogenbosch (Den Bosch). In the Middle Ages the dukes hunted on this rolling heathland, and The Duke takes its name from them.
The signature hole at The Duke is the 7th, a par 3 from elevated tees to an island green, a variation on the 17th at TPC Sawgrass in Florida. It measures 104 metres from the white and yellow tees and 86 from the red. The 7th lies between the 13th and 14th, two par 4s that run along opposite sides of the same lake, at 367 and 356 metres from the white tees.
The Duke mixes two styles. The original holes run through pine woodland, while most of the holes Rijks added are open and links-like. Each nine can also be played as a separate par-36 loop, the first at 2,894 metres from the white tees and the second at 2,888.
The Duke has four par 3s, ten par 4s and four par 5s, and measures 5,782 metres from the white tees, 5,466 from the yellow and 4,242 from the orange. Men playing the white tees face a course rating of 71.3 and a slope of 137, or 69.5 and 128 from the yellow tees. Women playing the red tees have a course rating of 71.5 and a slope of 126.
Can visitors play The Duke? Yes, in limited numbers, according to golf.nl: The Duke Club is a members-only business club for entrepreneurs that admits a small number of green fee players each week. Always contact the club first.
