Golfvereniging De Woeste Kop in Axel, Zeeland, is an 18-hole, par-72 golf course laid out among creeks, woodland and Zeeland polders.
Golfvereniging De Woeste Kop takes its name from a notorious sandbank in the Westerschelde estuary. The club started on a grass field at the De Braakman campsite; its first nine holes on the Smitsschorre opened on 10 September 1988, designed by Belgian golf architect Eric Paneels with landscape architect Jan Willem Bosch. De Woeste Kop grew to 18 holes in 2003, and Bruno Steensels has made changes since 2014.
The course at De Woeste Kop sits on the Justaasweg in Axel, inside the Smitsschorre nature area in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. According to the club, it borders typical Zeeland polders with dykes and poplars. A striking water tower can be seen from almost every hole at De Woeste Kop.
De Woeste Kop's 18 holes split into two nines that can also be played on their own. De Watertoren, holes 1 to 9, is a par 35 with six par 4s. De Grote Kreek, holes 10 to 18, is a par 37 with three par 5s, including the 16th: at 549 metres from the white tees, the longest hole on the course.
Since 2023 De Woeste Kop has also had De Kleine Kreek, a nine-hole par-3 loop set within De Grote Kreek. Its holes range from 57 to 134 metres, for a par of 27 over 827 metres, aimed at beginners and children.
Played as De Watertoren-De Grote Kreek, De Woeste Kop has ten par 4s, four par 3s and four par 5s, and measures 6,071 metres from the white tees and 4,176 metres from the orange tees. From the white tees the men's course rating is 72.9 with a slope of 129; from the yellow tees it is 70.9 and 128. For women, the red tees give 72.5 and a slope of 122.
Visitors with a verifiable handicap of 36 or better can play De Woeste Kop on a green fee. Register with the club secretariat at least 24 hours in advance and bring your golf federation card.
