About Golfclub Kleiburg
Golfclub Kleiburg in Brielle, South Holland, is an 18-hole, par-72 parkland golf course with plenty of water, renovated to a plan by Bruno Steensels.
Brielle, home of Golfclub Kleiburg, has deep roots in the game: the NGF heritage committee recognises that the oldest mention of colf in the northern Netherlands, from 1387, comes from Brielle. Kleiburg was the first public golf course in the Netherlands, and the club was founded in 1974 as the country's 21st golf club. In 2009 the club approved a renovation plan by architect Bruno Steensels, and the rebuilt 17th hole opened in June 2018.
Golfclub Kleiburg sits on the Krabbeweg in Brielle, in the Brielse Maas recreation area between the Brielse Meer and the Hartelkanaal, west of Rotterdam. Its views take in water and greenery, but also the industry and wind turbines of the Europoort.
Kleiburg changes character. The opening holes are tree-lined, with views over the Brielse Meer. Once you cross the dike, the course runs along the Hartelkanaal, where the wind blows freely and Kleiburg takes on an inland-links feel, before it returns to parkland with sloping banks and water hazards. Each nine can also be played as a separate loop at par 36.
The club calls the 15th at Kleiburg intimidating: a par 3 over water to an island green, 147 metres from the white tees and 112 metres from the yellow. The 17th, a 176-metre par 3 from the white tees, plays towards a large bunker, and the wind often has a say.
Kleiburg has ten par 4s, four par 3s and four par 5s, and measures 5,925 metres from the white tees and 4,391 metres from the orange tees. The men's course rating is 73.1 with a slope of 137 from white and 71.1 with a slope of 131 from yellow. For women, the red tees carry a course rating of 72.3 and a slope of 134.
