About Golfclub Heelsum
Golfclub Heelsum in Heelsum, Gelderland, is a 27-hole heathland course of three nines, par 71 or 72 over 18 holes, designed by Hans Hertzberger.
Golfclub Heelsum was founded in 1992, but objections and planning procedures meant it took years before the course was built. Hans Hertzberger drew the original layout. In 2008 the Scottish architect Steve Marnoch reshaped Golfclub Heelsum towards a classic heathland course, with ragged bunkers and open sandy waste areas.
Golfclub Heelsum sits on a deep layer of sand left by the last ice age. On the Sandr and Helsum nines, dry valleys cut by meltwater wind through the course and now act as strategic hazards. Heather was brought in with the help of Natuurmonumenten. Thanks to the sandy subsoil, Heelsum is playable all year round, almost always on summer greens in winter.
Golfclub Heelsum lies on the Ginkelseweg in the municipality of Renkum, north of the Lower Rhine near Arnhem. British paratroopers of the 1st Airborne Division landed on this ground in September 1944 during Operation Market Garden, and the Airborne nine at Golfclub Heelsum is named in their honour.
Played as Airborne-Sandr, Golfclub Heelsum is a par 72 with ten par 4s, four par 3s and four par 5s, measuring 6,258 metres from the white tees and 4,847 metres from the orange tees. The Airborne and Sandr nines are par 36 each, Helsum is par 35. From the white tees the men's course rating is 74.5 with a slope of 142; from the yellow tees it is 72.1 and 135. For women, the course rating from the red tees is 73.0 with a slope of 132.
Can visitors play Golfclub Heelsum? Yes: green fee players with a handicap of 54 or lower are welcome and can book a tee time up to seven days ahead. Since 2025 Golfclub Heelsum also has a qualifying par-3 course, laid out on the existing holes.
