Golfclub Gaasterland was set up as a foundation in March 1986, with the members' association following in May 1987. Play began in March 2003, and the course and clubhouse were officially opened on 12 September 2003. Gaasterland was the first golf course in Europe to be certified as a nature course.

Golfclub Gaasterland lies on the Sminkewei in Oudemirdum, in the wooded Gaasterland area of south-west Friesland, next to the Lycklamabos, the Elfbergen and the Wyldemerk. According to golf.nl, 64 per cent of the course area is nature: woodland, water, heath and fragile flora and fauna.
