Golfclub DeZandvoortse in Zandvoort, North Holland, plays at The Dunes, a nine-hole, par-29 links course set in the coastal dunes.
Golfclub DeZandvoortse dates back to 1988, when it started as ZHC-golf, a guest of the Zandvoort hockey club. A move in 1995 brought the name Zandvoortse Golfclub Sonderland. In 1999 the municipality of Zandvoort decided to build a golf course on former football pitches, matches on temporary holes followed from 2001, and the first competition on the new dune course was played in January 2003. The club has been called DeZandvoortse since June 2016.
The Dunes lies on the Duintjesveldweg in Zandvoort, on the coast west of Haarlem. It is a links course with large changes in elevation, so some tee shots play downhill and others uphill. Water, deep pot bunkers, steep dune slopes and at times unforgiving rough are the main hazards at The Dunes, and because the wind blows freely across the dunes, the course plays differently from one day to the next.
The Dunes has seven par 3s and two par 4s. The 2nd, a 310-metre par 4 from the white tees, is stroke index 1. The 1st is a long par 3 of 207 metres from the whites, while the 7th, at 83 metres, is the shortest hole. An 18-hole round at The Dunes means playing the nine twice, for a par of 58.
One loop of The Dunes measures 1,544 metres from the white tees, 1,439 metres from the yellow tees and 1,375 metres from the red tees. Over 18 holes, the men's course rating is 58.9 with a slope of 100 from the white tees and 57.8 with a slope of 101 from the yellow tees. For women, the course rating from the red tees is 59.9 with a slope of 104.
Can visitors play The Dunes? Yes: the golf course in Zandvoort is open to the public and green fee players are welcome. You need the NGF golf course permit (golfbaanpermissie), or you play in a group with someone who holds a handicap of 54 or better. Book your tee time online in advance.
