About Drentse Golfclub De Gelpenberg

Drentse Golfclub De Gelpenberg in Aalden, Drenthe, is an 18-hole, par-72 golf course in woodland and heathland, designed by Frank Pennink and Donald Steel.

Drentse Golfclub De Gelpenberg lies on the Gebbeveenweg just outside the village of Aalden, in the municipality of Coevorden, about 15 kilometres west of Emmen. The course rolls across heathland and a sand drift, framed by mixed woodland. Because De Gelpenberg sits on sandy soil, it plays well all year round, and the heather is in bloom from mid-August to mid-September.

The sand drift at De Gelpenberg lies on the 18th, a 385-metre par 4 from the white tees, and the club calls it ‘the largest natural bunker’. By stroke index the hardest hole is the 11th, a 388-metre par 4, while the longest is the opening hole, a par 5 of 506 metres.

Founded in 1970, Drentse Golfclub De Gelpenberg is the oldest golf club in Drenthe. Frank Pennink designed the original nine holes, and the extension to 18 holes followed in 1992 to a design by Donald Steel. In 2011 golf architect Frank Pont completed a major renovation of De Gelpenberg.

De Gelpenberg's 18 holes comprise ten par 4s, four par 3s and four par 5s, split into two nines of par 36 each. The course measures 6,321 metres from the white tees and 4,568 metres from the orange tees. For men, the white tees have a course rating of 74.2 and a slope of 142, and the yellow tees 73.1 and 139. Women playing from the red tees face a course rating of 73.7 and a slope of 134.

Green fee players are welcome at Drentse Golfclub De Gelpenberg, and tee times can be booked through the club's website or the Golf.nl app. Before 1 pm, visitors can only tee off in three-balls, with a combined handicap of no more than 90.0. The 9-hole par-3 course at De Gelpenberg, par 27 and 814 metres long with holes of 54 to 135 metres, is open to golfers without a handicap or Dutch course permit.
