De Noordhollandse GolfClub in Alkmaar, North Holland, plays at Sluispolder, an 18-hole, par-72 polder course by Joan Dudok van Heel and Alan Rijks.
Golfbaan Sluispolder lies on the Sluispolderweg, behind the dunes between Alkmaar and Bergen. Both loops look out over grazing cows, turning windmills and, in the distance, the Schoorl dunes. Sluispolder has plenty of bunkers and water, and this close to the coast the wind almost always plays a part.
De Noordhollandse GolfClub was founded on 7 December 1982 and plays at Sluispolder, which was built in stages. Golf architect Joan Dudok van Heel designed the original nine holes, now holes 10 to 18. In the early 1990s Alan Rijks laid out holes 1 to 9 on gently rolling ground, where a layer of old dune sand rises out of the clay polder. There a stiff south-westerly often helps or hinders. Rijks also designed the nine-hole par-3 course.
Sluispolder has ten par 4s, four par 3s and four par 5s, and its two par-36 nines can also be played as separate loops. The course measures 6,140 metres from the white tees and 4,496 metres from the orange tees. Men face a course rating of 73.2 and a slope of 134 from the white tees, and 71.7 with a slope of 128 from the yellow tees. From the red tees, the women's course rating is 72.6 with a slope of 130.
The back nine at Sluispolder opens with a long par 3: the 10th measures 171 metres from the white tees. The 18th is a dogleg par 4 of 342 metres from the whites, where the second shot has to carry water to a split-level green in front of the terrace. The 12th, a 407-metre par 4 from the whites, is stroke index 1: the hardest hole on the card.
Visitors are welcome at Golfbaan Sluispolder. Green fee players with a handicap of 54 or lower can play the 18 holes, and the par-3 course is open to everyone, beginners included. Book a tee time in advance and report to reception when you arrive.
